Nanoose Bay’s Mike Mason was one of two Canadian men finishing on the podium in the high jump at the 2014 Commonwealth Games.
Mason, a former member of the UBC Thunderbirds track program, finished in third place, winning the Bronze Medal after he cleared the mark of 2.25 meters. The 27-year-old was on the track in Glasgow while the Canadian National Anthem was being played for another Canadian athlete, Jim Steacy, was being awarded a Gold Medal in the hammer throw event.
After the high jump event was finished, Mason and teammate Derek Drouin, who won Gold in the high jump, handed off their Canadian flags to fellow athletes Brianne Theisen – Eaton and Jessica Zelinka, who would go on to win Gold and Silver respectively in the Heptahlon moments later.
