The Royal LePage Navy Blue Manrays grounded Royal LePage Yellow 4-0 Saturday to win the North Okanagan Youth Soccer Association Vernon Cup in the Under 13 Girls Division.
Paige Hason helped jumpstart the Manrays’ offence by hitting the cross bar and Vicky Grahn buried the rebound. Both teams showed great passing skills and determination.
Ava Ready, Sarah Weibe and Jamieson Gordon-Mason did very well against the Yellows’ offence. Midway through the second half, Hason scored on a hard grounder to make it 2-0. Maddie Powls, Latisha Baker and Sierra Benner were key players setting up the offence.
Kiona Ramsey, from the end line, passed the ball to the top of the 18-yard box to Maddie Powls, who converted.
With just a few minutes left, Hason passed to Haley Lapp, who struck the ball over the Yellows’ keeper. Jenna Mulholland made some key saves to earn a well-deserved shut out.
The Manrays opened with a 6-1 win Friday night over Royal LePage Red.
Hason ignited the offensive fireworks just like Saturday, nailing the cross bar with Benner scoring on the rebound for the opening goal.
Minutes later, the Reds equalized before the Manrays’ Latisha Baker followed up on her own rebound to make 2-1 late in the first half.
The Reds had lots of shots and just missed the net. Powls and Mulholland shared netminding duties, making it hard for the Red team to score.
Carmen Pavlov, Milana Ivanoff and Ready played well against the Reds’ offence. Andraya Holmes and Benner were clutch in the middle of the field.
Baker passed up the wing to Grahn, who relayed to Kiona Ramsey for the 3-1 goal. Benner then fed Grahn, while Tiffany Elliott and Lapp completed the Manrays’ offence.
The U12/U13 Boys Division Red Bulls completed their season with a win in the Vernon Cup.
The boys had a great year by winning all their games. Two goals from top scorer Lendrit Ademi and one from Isaac Poulton sealed their victory.
The team had set a challenge at the beginning of the season to try and have every player score a goal. Through unselfish play, they achieved this when keeper Jared Bobryk, the only player without a goal, moved to a forward position to slide the ball home to the cheers of his teammates.
Captain Aidan Godfrey collected the medals and the boys celebrated a great season.
