North Cariboo Christian School (NCCS) hosted its third annual track and field day on Thursday June 7.

One hundred and eighty athletes from Grades 3 to 9 competed in jumping, running and throwing competitions to the cheers of their peers.

NCCS hosted Quesnel’s St. Ann’s Catholic School and three schools from Williams Lake: Maranatha Christian School, Sacred Heart Catholic School and Cariboo Adventist Academy.

“What was really notable was the interaction between all the kids,” says NCCS principal Andrew Martin.

“They just immediately clicked and made friends really quickly.”

In the spirit of inclusivity, Martin says several of the schools’ disabled athletes competed side-by-side with their classmates.

He explains that this was the first time they have hosted five schools for the athletics competition.

“Last year we had three and before that it was just us and St. Ann’s,” he says.

“Next year we’re looking at inviting a school or two from Prince George.”

While there was evidence of rivalries forming between NCCS and St. Ann’s and some of the Williams Lake schools, Martin says the competition emphasized fairness and sportsmanship.
