At its Monday meeting, Nelson City Council honoured the founder and owner of the Nelson Boxing Club for his contribution to sports in the city.
Earlier this year, Jesse Pineiro was named coach of the year by BC Boxing and head coach of Team BC at the national championships.
In presenting a plaque to Pineiro, Councillor Keith Page said, “At the 2020 boxing championships in Richmond in February, Nelson boxers coached by Jesse won an astounding five medals. Because of his management, leadership and coaching the club has made itself known throughout the province as a boxing powerhouse.”
In an interview with the Star, Pineiro said he sees the award as recognition for five years of hard work.
“It’s a kind of milestone for me,” he said. “It’s nice to know that the community sees what we’re doing and values it. It’s good to know that the community is behind us.”
Asked about his motivation, Pineiro said, “I keep getting better and I keep learning things. I keep learning from the people around me and from my athletes. It’s the most fulfilling thing that I’ve been able to do in my life, both as a competitor, when I did that, and as a coach now.”
Page said Pineiro provides “a safe, fun, and supportive environment for athletes in the West Kootenay to develop their skills while learning about fair play, discipline and sportsmanship.”
