The Nelson Skating Club was dressed in gold after the Kootenay Region Championships.
The team, which competed in Creston on Feb. 10 to 12, earned several Gold ratings.
Breanna Tomilin passed her Gold Interpretive test, the highest level of Skate Canada tests. Tomilin delighted the judge with her flowing program and nuanced interpretation. She has now achieved three out of four Gold levels in dance, skills and interpretative, with only free skate remaining to achieve.
Tomilin also won the bronze medal in the STAR 6 free skate category with another strong showing, this time showcasing her technical ability.
Competition highlights included Isabella Kroker Kimber winning the bronze medal in the Bronze interpretive category to an adrenaline packed program sound tracked by Coldplay’s “A Sky Full of Stars.” She also earned the silver medal in the STAR 5 elements competition with three out of four Gold rated elements.
In the STAR 5 free skate category, Morgan Sabo was close the the podium with her best finish this season, placing fourth and earning enough points to be invited to the Provincial Development Camp in Kelowna.
In the solo dance Juvenile level, Brianne Morris won the Silver medal, competing in the Ten Fox and European Waltz dances.
A number of Gold ratings were earned by Nelson skaters. Morris received a Gold rating in STAR 3 elements, while Makayla Pickering earned a Gold rating in the STAR 2/3 solo dance.
Each club in the Kootenay Region also entered in the Team Spirit Showcase, a new event introduced this season. Each club created an entertaining routine in two minutes or less. The Nelson team skated a lyrical and graceful routine that earned a Gold rating.
The team consisted of Helena Keating, Ceili Kooznetsoff, Kroker Kimber, Morris, Pickering and Mallory Pinske. The final event of the competition saw the youngest, newest competitive figure skaters perform in the STAR 1 event. Nelson skaters earned silver and bronze ratings, turning in consistent performances.
Overall, the competition was a huge success for Nelson skaters, and for most the final competition of the season. A number of skaters will compete at the STARSkate Super Series Final in Kelowna, March 3 to 5, where they will be ranked against skaters from all over B.C.
