Nelson Thunder rumble to victory in Kimberley

The Thunder defeated the Cranbrook Trash Pandas in the final

The Nelson Thunder atom hockey team emerged victorious over the weekend at the Kimberley Atom Invitational.

The Thunder opened their tournament with a convincing 12-0 win over Golden and skated to a 4-4 tie against the Cranbrook Trash Pandas after seeing a 4-1 lead evaporate in the third period. The Thunder finished their round-robin play by ousting the host Kimberley Nitros 5-2.

Those results earned the Thunder a berth into the semifinals against the Castlegar Rebels. The Nelson Thunder broke the scoreless tie with three unanswered goals to end the first period and went on to win 5-2.

In the final, the Thunder rolled to a 7-1 victory over the Trash Pandas for their first gold-medal victory.
