New drag season for Vancouver Island racer

The Schulte Racing Team (SRT) is ready for the 2017 drag racing season.

The Schulte Racing Team (SRT) is ready for the 2017 drag racing season.

Unfortunately, the only NHRA race tracks that can handle race cars of this calibre are on the Lower Mainland, the nearest being in Mission.

This family race team from Oyster River, owned and operated by Otto and Leslie Schulte, race a 1,200 horsepower Pro Stock ‘05 RJ Racecars Cavalier, capable of 1/4 mile e.t.’s of 7.4 seconds at 180 mph (300 kph).

The highly accomplished SRT is starting their 28th year in the sport, with 11 championships under their belts. During their career they have run in nine different classes with five different cars, and have raced at tracks all through western Canada and the Pacific Northwest. They stepped up to their newest quick ride in 2016.

In 2017, the SRT will be racing at Mission Raceway Park in the Canada West Doorslammers series and may also join the Edmonton-based Western Drag Race League in the Top Sportsman class.

The Schultes look forward to a major NHRA race track potentially located at the Campbell River Airport, as proposed by the Vancouver Island Motorsport Association (www.VIMSA.ca).

Otto says, “This would be a dream come true for us having a big track right here in Campbell River without having to leave the Island, which is both expensive and time consuming.

“It would attract hundreds of race cars from all over the Island and thousands of spectators, and would be a major attraction in Campbell River.”

Without sponsors, this sport would not exist at the level it does today and the SRT is sponsored this year by Associated Tire from Campbell River, Odlum Brown Limited Courtenay, E&B Helicopters Campbell River, Quality deSigns Campbell River and Lordco Auto Parts from both cities.
