The Sooke River 10K is set to run this Sunday (March 25).
It’s the seventh race in the Vancouver Island Race Series and starts at 11 a.m. There will be a 10:30 a.m. start for walkers and slower runners.
The race will start and finish at Edward Milne School and will follow an undulating course along Sooke River Road to the Sooke Potholes and back.
This is the 18th year the Sooke 10K has been part of the race series, and for the first time, TriStars Training is hosting the race.
“We’re going to make it fun,” said Saskia Bjornson, race director for TriStars Training.
So far, 400 athletes have registered for this Sunday’s race, with many returnees including last year’s champion Nick Walker.

The course records for Sooke were set in 2004 by Steve Osaduik (30:19) and Meghan Day (35:23). Last year’s race was won by Nick Walker in a time of 33.51.
Bjornson expects more than 30 volunteers helping runners along the way. There will be food, entertainment and an awards ceremony after the race.
Runners can register online until 6 pm Friday (March 23) at www.islandseries.org or on race day at Edward Milne School from 9 a.m. to 10:15 a.m. Race registration is $30 for adults and $25 for youth until March 10. Race day fees are $40.
Sooke River 10K will be followed by the Synergy Health Management Bazan Bay 5K and Series Award on April 8.
Meanwhile, six Sooke runners competed in the Comox RV Half Marathon on Sunday in Courtenay, with Robert Butterworth placing first in the men’s 75-79 division. Other local racers included Reg Willick, Jonathan Dvorak, Laura Barnes, Sandra Fawcett and Bruce Hawkes.
