NIFA Pacific United FC showed how far they’ve come in a short time in a rematch of their season opener.
NIFA opened the Div. 3 women’s soccer season with a 3-0 loss to a very strong Gorge United side on Oct. 25. When the teams met again at Victoria’s Hampton Park on Sunday, Gorge prevailed 5-1, but head coach Dano Thorne liked the work done by his team at both ends.
“They scored three very early, and we got one back just at halftime by Mariah Thomas,” Thorne reported. “We held our own for the rest of the match, and they got two in the last 10 minutes. Still improvement over our first match, where we defended all that game.”
While Thomas had the honour of scoring NIFA’s first goal in their first season, she wasn’t the only standout player, as newcomers Sarah Douglas, Dennene Wallace and Jen Jack also had strong showings.
“The team is working hard and they are very keen to improve,” Thorne commented. “Enjoying the playing and team bonding in this most unusual season ever. It keeps me motivated and enjoy the ride as well.”
NIFA will play host to the Prospect Lake Lakers at Shawnigan Lake School this coming Sunday at 10 a.m.
