The deadline is approaching to nominate outstanding athletes for a 2016 Premier’s Award for Aboriginal Youth Excellence in Sport.
The awards, overseen by the Aboriginal Sport, Recreation and Physical Activity Partners Council, celebrate the outstanding achievements of aboriginal athletes who excel in competitive sport and are aiming to compete at an even more elite level in future.
Nominees must be aboriginal athletes age 24 or younger who are training and competing in performance sport. They must display strong leadership qualities, be committed to pursuing higher education and serve as community role models on and off the field.
New this year, four male and four female athletes in each of the six Partners Council regions, including Vancouver Island, will be selected for a regional award. Among those winners, 12 (six male, six female) will be chosen for provincial awards.
Ceremonies to honour all the regional recipients will be held in November, while the provincial awards gala happens next March in Kelowna.
