Nominations are open for the North Cowichan/Duncan Sports Wall of Fame class of 2019.
Established in 2008, the Wall of Fame celebrates the rich history of sports in the community by recognizing athletes, coaches, teams, administrators and builders who have reached a high level of the sport or made significant contributions within the Cowichan Valley.
“Every two years we put a call out for nominations,” North Cowichan Mayor Al Siebring related. “We ask the community to think about the teams, athletes, coaches or administrators who have excelled in their sport or contributed to our community significantly through local athletics, and we invite you to submit a nomination package on their behalf.”
Nominations will go to the Sports Wall of Fame Nominating Committee, which in turn makes recommendations to North Cowichan council. The new inductees will be announced later this year and inducted at a ceremony in the fall.
The most recent inductions in 2017 included pro hockey player Matt Ellison, Canadian Football League player Gerry Hornett, soccer coach and golfer Glen Martin, hockey and baseball coach Jack Rochon, and archer Shona Shadlock (née Armand).
The Sports Wall of Fame is located in the lobby of the Cowichan Aquatic Centre.
