North Delta high schools take podium at track and field championships

North Delta Secondary and Burnsview took medals at the event in Langley on May 31 to June 2

North Delta schools had a strong showing at the B.C. Track and Field Championships in Langley this past weekend, although they only took the podium a few times.

North Delta Secondary’s Ryland Malleri, competing in the Special Olympics portion of the championship, made it to the most finals out of all Delta’s competitors. He came in second for the men’s 400 metre run, with a time of 1:07.33, as well as fifth for the 100 metre run in his division and sixth in mixed shot put.

Dawson Inkster and Micah Piva, both Burnsview, also made it onto the podium. Inkster’s 11.13 metre triple jump earned him a third place finish in the Grade 8 men’s division, while Piva’s

North Delta Secondary’s Simran Bangar found an eight place finish in the one kilogram senior women’s discus throw, and a ninth place finish in shot put. Fellow NDSS senior Kirubel Bogale came in 25th for his 2000 metre steeple chase run.

Charity Obazughanmwen, another NDSS student, described as a “future superstar” by coach Tim Stielow, came 13th in the women’s junior 200 metre and 18th in the 100 metre runs.

Celine Hirsch from Burnsview was tied for 15th place with a 1.4 metre high jump in the women’s senior division. Hanna Millic, Seaquam, found an 11th place finish for her 3000 metre run in the women’s senior division.

Fellow Seahawk Brendan Luccock came in fifth with his 42.21 second run at the 300 metre hurdles in the men’s junior division.

Seaquam’s Jordan Murrell came in 18th in the Grade 8 women’s javelin with a 20.91 metre throw, while Burnsview’s Jaden Pawluk came in 14th in the men’s division with a 29.42 metre throw. He also came in 10th for Grade 8 men’s 100 metre hurdles.

Sands athletes Campbell Kinsman and Emily Bowles also competed. Kinsman placed 12th in the Grade 8 men’s 200 metre with a time of 25.39 seconds. Bowles placed 19th in Grade 8 women’s 800 metre with a time of 2:41.51, and placed 21st in the 1500 metre run.
