North Island basketball teams in tough at BC’s

North Island teams had a tough start at the triple A provincial high school basketball championships, which opened Wednesday in Langley.

Vancouver Island’s top seed and provincial No. 11, Mark Isfeld, lost to No. 6 seed Pitt Meadows (69-59) on Wednesday and to No. 3 Argyle of North Vancouver (71-64) on Thursday.

The Vanier Towhees, the number three-ranked Island team entering the tourney, lost to No. 4 North Delta (67-42) and No. 12 M.E.I. of Abbotsford (89-70).

Carihi lost to No. 2 seed South Kamloops Titans Wednesday and to the defending champion Rick Hansen Hurricanes Thursday.

Isfeld beat Carihi 61-40 on Friday, while Vanier beat No. 16 Caledonia of Terrace by a score of 67-46.

Burnaby’s Byrne Creek is ranked number one.

The tournament runs until Saturday.
