Kapak rules short track

Fresh off a stellar performance at the B.C. Winter Games, Vernon’s Connie Kapak continued her hot streak, claiming gold in the 12 Girls class at the B.C. Short Track Speed Skating Championships last weekend in Kamloops.

For Kapak, it was her seventh gold at the provincial level this season. She will represent B.C. at the Western Canadian Championships, March 23-25, in Winnipeg.

The 13-year-old pocketed four speed skating medals and set a provincial record in the 400-metre race at the B.C. Winter Games venue in Armstrong.

 

Tennis serves up spring league

B.C. Tennis Leagues is once again inviting local players to register for both singles and doubles action starting this spring.

“This is a good opportunity to play tennis at your own skill level on a local community tennis court,” said Ron Shalley, league director.

Players or teams play a minimum of six matches against players of similar skill level. Schedules will arrive in the mail, and players are responsible for making their own arrangements for match times.

Silver Star skiers grab gold

A trio of Silver Star skiers struck gold at the Rio Tinto Alcan Nancy Greene Ski League Championships last weekend at Big White Resort.

Taking first-place honours in Sunday’s action were Liam Glennon, nine, Makena Kersey, 10 andSage Shaw, 12.

A total of 127 competitors ranging from five to eight years old raced Saturday, and 111 athletes ranging from nine to 11 took to the hill Sunday.

 

Sovereign hosting freestyle loppet

Sovereign Lake Nordic Centre is inviting all comers to compete in its Freestyle Loppet Saturday morning.

The event begins at 10 a.m. and is open to skiers of all abilities, from recreational to elite. Events start at two or four kilometres for kids, plus 10-km, 15-km and 30-km distances for adults.

“Loppets are citizen cross-country ski events where participation is the key,” said Glenn Bond, Sovereign’s manager. “Loppets are all about skiing with your friends and making new friends at your pace.

“There are energy drinks on the trail to keep you feeling great, many draw prizes, music, awards and lots of food at the finish line.”

The Sovereign Lake Loppet is the final leg of the Interior Loppet Series, which draws competitors from B.C., Alberta, Washington state and beyond.

This year’s event will use the courses designed for the Sparkling Hill Masters World Cup, which have garnered excellent feedback from around the world.

Amateur boxing card on tap

CounterPunch Boxing Club is hosting an amateur boxing event Saturday at the Vernon Rec Centre auditorium.

The event will feature bouts ranging from youths to adults.

Doors open at 6 p.m., with fights scheduled to start at 7. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased in advance at Breakaway Fitness (220-2801 35th Avenue).
