The North West (Zone 7) boys softball team came to Surrey considering themselves the underdogs in the BC Summer Games, but proved they have some bite in a lopsided win over Fraser River-Delta (Zone 4) in preliminary action on Saturday.

Coaching the unassuming team is Murray Anderson from Smithers, who believes the long trek to Surrey is definitely worth it.

“For a group of kids I’ve never played with, they really pulled through,” boasted Anderson.

His 13-year-old son Spencer Anderson is a pitcher on the team.

“I was just expecting to just come out and have some fun and play our hardest,” the 13-year-old said, after eating a well-deserved meal.

Also on their victorious team is catcher Zach Carrita, a 14-year-old from Kitimat. He has been playing softball for only three years, but by making every catch throughout the game, Carrita will have many memorable moments with his teammates in his very first BC Summer Games.
