Diego Maffia only started to realize that he was doing something special when the Kelowna crowd watching the game between Oak Bay High and the Ross Sheppard Thunderbirds started to get loud.

“I don’t think it really sinked in until the end of the [fourth quarter] what was happening and the crowd was being loud that I had an idea of how many points I had,” said the Brazilian-born Maffia, who last year was the Most Valuable Player as the Oak Bay won its fourth consecutive Island finals. Maffia has also helped to lead the school’s soccer team to success.

Maffia finished the game with 96 points — a new record by a British Columbia high school player. Nelson’s Greg DeVries held the previous record with 82 points scored in 1991.

“This record means a lot to me because it shows all the hard work I put in paying off and after the game,” said Maffia. “I was still in shock about what had just happened and just wanted to take it all in and enjoy the moment.”
