In high school sports, Oak Bay won the senior boys’ volleyball Lower Island AAA Championships Wednesday night and will be hosting the AAA Island Championships Nov. 17 and 18.
This week in the Lower Island playoffs leading up to the Island Championships, Oak Bay High won, defeating Claremont in the final. This is Oak Bay’s 11th Lower Island Championship win in the last 13 years.
“A unique characteristic, and strength, of the Oak Bay Barbers is that the players excel at more than one sport: the starting roster includes three starters from the basketball team, two starters from the soccer team, and one from the rugby team. They are good athletes who are learning skill in multiple sports, making them better players in all of their sports,” says Coach Al Carmichael. “This is a philosophy common across all sports at Oak Bay, where student-athletes are encouraged to participate in multiple sports, and is the primary reason the school has more provincial banners hanging from the gym ceiling than any other school in BC.”
Claremont upset Royal Bay in one of the semi-finals. Oak Bay beat Reynolds in the other semi-final. Royal Bay defeated Reynolds in the third place game.
The current provincial ranking is Oak Bay in #3, Royal Bay in #6, Reynolds in #12, Dover Bay in #15, Claremont in #20.
The Island Championship is a zone championship that qualifies teams for the BCs on the AAA side. There are eight teams involved, two from the north island and six from the south, divided into two pools to start. Four teams will advance to the BCs.
