Old Timer’s Hockey taking registration

Oldtimers hockey looking for players

The 100 Mile Old Timer’s Hockey Association is inviting men and women, 35 years of age and older to register for the 2011/12 season.

It’s a no-contact, draft league for players with all levels of experience, including newcomers to the game.

“Teams are changed and redrafted every year, so everyone will be placed on a team,” says club treasurer John Benastick.

Games are played Wednesday at 8:45 p.m. at the South Cariboo Rec. Centre (SCRC) in 100 Mile House and at 7:30 and 8:45 p.m. each Thursday at the Rolf Zeis Memorial Arena in Lac la Hache.

All games consist of two, 20-minute stop time periods and the first matchup of the season is scheduled for Oct. 5 at the SCRC.

Each team gets one game per week, and Jude Dion, one of the league’s organizers, says they are expecting to ice five or six teams this season.

He says playing Old Timer’s hockey has its benefits.

“It’s the only organized (adult) league in town with refs, scorekeepers and timekeepers.”

The league has been in existence since 2002.

Teams can look forward to about 22 games during the course of the season and a wind-up banquet in April that is free of charge. Year-end individual and team trophies are awarded for season play, and playoff championships are also held at the end of the season.

Registration costs are tailored to accommodate all walks of life, with a full-time player paying $275 for the season and shift workers paying $175. Goalies are charged $125.

Registration is taking place now at Exeter Sporting Goods and players must be 35 years of age by Jan. 1, 2012. Players will receive a $25 reimbursement for every new player they bring into the league.
