Wednesday, Nov. 22 was a make-up game between the U14 Riptide girls and their older U15 sisters at the Vanier Turf.
These teams met pre-season as a friendly with the U15s winning 6-1. Before the game began, head coach Graeme Sargent discussed making a formation change to enable better support within the U14 midfield. The girls seemed to respond to the new formation and transitioned well. As the game began it was evident the U15s were going to use their physical play to out muscle the younger squad.
The play was quick with both teams making great runs through the opposition’s back line. It wasn’t until minute 38 that the U15s scored first to end the half at 1-0.
The pace was equally quick as the second half began. The physical and demanding play continued on both sides as either sister wasn’t going to let the other sister win.
The U14s defensive line of Keira Trevor, Gillianne Stewardson and Meaghan Linegar were the show stoppers of the evening. Outside fullback Trevor always seemed to be at the right place at the right time to thwart multiple offensive attacks. The game almost came to a tie at minute 65 as U14 striker Katie Anderson came within inches of the top corner, sending the hometown crowd into a frenzy.
The game ended 1-0. Next home game for the U14s is Saturday at the Vanier Turf at 12:30 p.m.
