Local Olympians Brent Hayden and Teresa Gabriele were honoured with lifetime achievement awards by PacificSport Fraser Valley at its annual general meeting on May 27.
Hayden, a Mission native, is one of Canada’s most decorated swimmers. He won gold in the 100-metre freestyle at the World Aquatic Championships in 2007 and climbed the podium again with a silver medal in the same distance in 2011. He wrapped up his career with a bronze medal in the 100m free at the London Olympics last summer.
Fellow Mission native Gabriele was a mainstay with the Canadian women’s basketball program for over a decade. The 5’5″ point guard helped the national team qualify for the Olympics in 2000, and she guided the squad as far as the quarter-finals at the London Games 12 years later.
