Two games into the B.C. high school football season, the KSS Owls have served notice they intend to be a force in B.C. high school football’s Eastern Conference.
Thanks to Friday’s convincing win over the rival Mt. Boucherie Bears, the Owls (2-0) are tied for top spot with perennial powerhouse, the St. Thomas More Knights.
The Owls will look to make it three straight on Saturday afternoon when they host Abbotsford’s WJ Mouat Hawks. Kick off at the CNC turf field is 2 p.m.
On Friday night at 6:30 at the Apple Bowl, Boucherie will take on STMC.
Prior to that at 4 p.m., the Rutland Voodoos kick off their regular season against the West Vancouver Highlanders.
Meanwhile, KSS proved too much for the Bears Friday, winning the 2015 Battle of the Bridge 39-6 at the Apple Bowl.
“This game was big as there is always bragging rights on the line for the year,” said Owls coach Ben Macauley. “The first half was sloppy football. We made a lot of errors, but we have a resilient group of kids.”
QB Parker Simson scored on a 60-yard run and Seth Campbell ran in from eight yards to spot the Owls to a 16-6 halftime lead.
Chris Smith, on a kick return, scored the Bears only major in the first half.
The Owls’ defense limited Boucherie’s attack, with Zack Vint earning two sacks and a forced fumble which Newton Benson scooped and rumbled 40 yards for a touchdown.
Sean McMechan had eight tackles for KSS and Cole Pederson added four tackles and an interception to seal the game.
Campbell rounded out the scoring with an eight-yard touchdown.
