Once the dust settled in the ring, Aubrey “Bam Bam” Morrow was all smiles after his victory over ninth-ranked Jonah Arbuckle on July 18.
A couple of weeks later, the dust has settled even more and Morrow finds himself ranked in the top five for middleweights in Canada, putting him in contention for a shot at the Canadian Middleweight Championship.
Morrow, who was fighting July 18 for the first time in more than four years, shook off what little bit of rust he showed early on in his fight against Arbuckle and proceeded to dominate the ninth-ranked Canadian middleweight, eventually earning the TKO victory in round three of their six-round bout.
It’s a bout that was a long time coming for Bam Bam, who had setback after setback in his four years since the last time he set foot in the ring.
“It was hard with the injuries, having one thing after another,” Morrow said. “I stuck with it though and all the time put in with Rich and the boys (Shane Andreesen and Mark Woolnough) really got me ready for that fight.”
Vaulting in to the top five, Morrow now sits as the fourth-ranked Canadian Middleweight, one spot behind stablemate Mark “Machine Gun” Woolnough. Morrow hopes to fulfill his goal of fighting for the Middleweight title by the end of 2014.
“We’ll see how it goes. It’s a goal of mine, for sure, to win the belt,” Morrow said. “With the last fight ending early and not having any injuries at all, I’m ready to go again should I have another fight come up. I’m still in good shape from all the training we did for that July 18th fight so there’s still time to put it to good use.”
Morrow put on quite the showing for the hometown fans and friends at the July 18 event at the Port Theater in Nanaimo. Coming out to a loud ovation, Morrow was ready to go as soon as the bell sounded.
“That was pretty crazy, I couldn’t even hear my own music when I came out,” Morrow said. “I’ve never had the chance to fight in front of so many friends and fans like that before, so it was pretty cool. Definitely gives you a little more energy when you step into the ring, that’s for sure.”
His professional record now standing at an impressive 6–1–2, with five of the six wins by KO. Morrow hopes to find another fight or two sooner rather than later, so he can keep the rust off. Continuing his training after his previous fight has helped him maintain his preparation, but Morrow is itching to get back in to the ring.
“If we can go again soon, that would be ideal,” Morrow said. “We’ll be looking in Canada and down in the States too, doesn’t really matter where it’s going to be. As long as there isn’t a long layoff in between fights, I’ll be ready to go when the next one comes along.”
