A couple of students from Ballenas Secondary School were among the racers who participated in the Klondike Ski/Boarder Cross Feb. 2 at Mount Washington.
Eric Tomasson and Layne Anvelt of Parksville didn’t make it to the podium but they said they had fun shooting down a specially designed course packed with several elements including banks, waves, kickers and rollers.
One of the newest Olympic disciplines which debuted at the 2010 Vancouver games, the event has competitors race through a course that truly tests a competitors all-around skill and nerve.
In snowboard and ski cross the key is getting out of the start gate first; from there racers jockey for position as they navigate the twisting course with speed and precision.
For Anvelt and Tomasson it was their first time competing in a skier cross and although both competitors didn’t take home any medals they said they were just happy to make it down the course.
