The smiles said it all last week as the youngsters from Sunset Lanes got together to show off the medals they garnered in their year-end five pin bowling playoffs.
Parksville Bantams Haven Millen and Gavin Murchie, and Juniors Giuseppi Bochek and Jason Pearse were in fine form at the YBC Youth Doubles Zone Finals at Brechin Lanes in Nanaimo March 20, as both teams garnered gold in their divisions. Both teams advanced to the provincial championships at Capri Lanes in Kelowna April 9, and the local Jr. Boys finished third in B.C.
According to coach David Kuss, the kids bowled three games each at the zone finals in Nanaimo. Gavin and Haven were 151 pins over average as a team (they won by 27 pins), and Giuseppi and Jason were a smoking hot 210 pins over as a team (they won by 71 pins).
At the provincials, Gavin and Haven finished eighth and as a team were 106 pins over average. Giuseppi and Jason as a team were 257 pins over average.
“They were in fourth place going into the last game when they bowled 81 pins over average to overtake the third place team and win the bronze medal. They did great,” said Kuss.
The Sunset Kids didn’t have separate team names (which some do). “We barely had enough kids this year to make one team,” Dave said after, explaining, “I lost all my seniors from last year, so we are in a rebuilding stage (with) only seven kids this year (mainly bantams).
“With half of them brand new to tournament play, I couldn’t be more proud of the way they have performed this year. Every one of them was eager to enter in to all the tournaments that were available and enjoyed the thrill of competition. I see good things in the future for this young group.”
