Kaisha Fagrie is a national champion.
A BMX (bicycle moto cross) rider, 14-year-old Fagrie came home from the recent Canadian Grand Nationals in Chilliwack a Canadian champion.
She won all six races in her 14-year-old girls category – three on one day and three the next.
She said she wasn’t a fan of the course as it was tough, with lots of jumps coming out of different sections.
Competition came from all over, including the United States and Alberta, but she says competition in her category wasn’t too tough.
“Not this time, most of the girls usually in the class already turned 15.”
Although there aren’t many female racers, they’re not unusual.
Asked about her secret to winning, she says it’s all in the technique, which she’s learned from BMX camps and by practising.
Along with regular practice, Fagrie stays fit doing other sports including mountain biking, soccer, cross-country running, downhill skiing and cross-country skiing.
Her dad rode BMX, which got her started. At 14, she’s already been riding for nine years, and her younger brother Jacob also races.
Fagrie’s agenda in the next few weeks includes regional, provincial and national races. The season generally starts in March or April when the tracks are ready and it concludes in October.
The sports takes a lot of strength because riders must stand up the whole time they’re racing.
But the reason she likes it so much?
“It’s lots of fun.”
