Penticton Pinnacles women’s U18 soccer take down Kamloops

Dramatic finish in a battle of the top two soccer teams

The Penticton Pinnacles U18 team have done something no other team has done this season — beat Kamloops.

“When it looked like the game would end in a draw the Pinnacles broke out quickly from the back and Anya Nazaroff finished off neatly with a last-minute goal to earn a well-deserved 4-3 win,” said coach Derrick Webb.

While both teams pressed quickly and missed early opportunities, Elena Selles was the first to get on the board. Midway through the first half she made a run from the right back to go in on a breakaway and open the scoring for the Pinnacles. Before the end of the first half Britney Young had a nice finish to give the Pinnacles a 2-0 lead.

The Pinnacles coach said they looked to be cruising to an easy win early in the second half, but then one of the Kamloops defenders was looking to clear a ball from about 45 yards out that caught everyone off guard to make it 2-1.

The Pinnacles restored their two-goal lead shortly after when Maria Iannone neatly volleyed in from a corner kick. However, the Pinnacles went to sleep for a few minutes after that and Kamloops tied it up with two quick goals. The Pinnacles kept their composure to ensure the win in the end.

The team now has one league game left and then hope to qualify of the provincials in the first week of July in Kamloops.
