The Ladysmith 49ers routed the Cowichan Thunderbirds at home on Monday afternoon as they ran away with a 78-0 victory.
With the victory LSS’ senior boys squad brings its record to 2-2 on the season.
“It was pretty one-sided and the kids played well today,” said 49ers head coach Kyle MacDonald. “In a game like that everybody sort of looks good. Cowichan didn’t tackle really well so we kind of scored at will so it’s a bit easier than when you’re playing a stronger team and they’re making those tackles.”
Ladysmith ran for 12 tries and made all but three of their two-point conversions.
Last week the 49ers lost a close match to St. Michael’s University 36-30. Despite the scoresheet, LSS executed better on defence than in a game they dropped to Victoria’s Glenlyon Norfolk School just before spring break.
“The kids had a big improvement against St. Michaels,” MacDonald said. “It was a good competitive game but our defence cost us and we lost (against GNS). We worked on it in practice and then they really played well defensively against SMU.”
The 49ers next match is an away game against Port Alberni on Monday but the boys aren’t sure what to expect for their opponent.
“We didn’t play them last year so it’s hard to say. I’m hoping it will be competitive,” MacDonald said.
