The Abbotsford Pilots ran into a hot goalie against the Delta Ice Hawks on Friday night.
Ice Hawks goalie Jacob Latrace stopped 52 of 54 shots fired at him to lead Delta to a 5-4 win over Abbotsford at the MSA Arena on Friday.
The loss was the first setback of the 2015-16 season for Abbotsford.
Pilots head coach Jim Cowden said he liked his team’s performance but they couldn’t solve Latrace when they needed to.
“I thought we played well as a team but unfortunately their goalie played outstanding and he wont hem the game,” he said. “He was the difference.”
Abbotsford opened the scoring early, with Shawn Olson potting a goal and then Mitchell Plevy added a power play goal for the Pilots. Delta fought back to make it 2-1 but then Phillip Gauthtier put Abbotsford up by two again. Delta scored again to end the period 3-2 for Abbotsford.
The teams traded goals and leads in the second period but the Ice Hawks outscored Abbotsford 3-1 in the second and carried the 5-4 lead throughout the third period to skate away with the win.
The Pilots take on the Port Moody Panthers in Port Moody on Saturday to close out the weekend.
