On Canada Day, the Nanaimo Pirates will play their Canadian brand of America’s favourite pastime.
The Hub City Paving Pirates baseball team hosts a doubleheader this Wednesday (July 1) when the Victoria Mariners visit Serauxmen Stadium.
It’s the start of an eight-game homestand for the Pirates, who are in fourth place in the B.C. Premier Baseball League and in contention to climb higher.
“There’s a lot of scoreboard watching…” said Doug Rogers, Pirates manager. “There’s opportunity there. Guys are obviously pretty excited and they want to hunt down those teams above them, so we’re playing for that.”
Wednesday’s games start at noon and 2:30 p.m.
From there, the Pirates stay busy as they host the league-leading North Shore Twins on Saturday at noon and 2:30 p.m. and then host the North Delta Blue Jays on Sunday at 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.
