The Nanaimo Hub City Paving Pirates have a chance to accomplish a lot at the B.C.’s Best tournament in Parksville this coming weekend. Nanaimo’s B.C. Premier Baseball League club can keep sharp, try for a tournament title and maybe even pick up a win in league play.
Contrary to information published in Thursday’s print issue of the Bulletin, the Pirates do have one league game at the tournament. They face the White Rock Tritons on Saturday (May 18) at 9:30 a.m. at Parksville’s Springwood Park.
The rest of the weekend games are exhibitions that the Pirates will try to use to their best advantage.
“The tournament’s going to be a nice way for us to get guys innings and try to keep everybody on page,” said Doug Rogers, Pirates manager.
He said the tournament might be a chance for guys to get into a rhythm at the plate.
“If they get a couple hits it tends to carry over into league play, so that’s what we’re hoping for,” said Rogers.
Some of the other teams entered in the tourney are the host Royals, the Victoria Mariners and Alberta’s Okotoks Dawgs.
GAME ON … The Pirates start the tournament Friday (May 17) with a game against the Mariners at 12:30 p.m. at Springwood.
