The Mid Island Pirates have a pennant and now they’ll get to play for a championship.
The Hub City Paving Pirates swept past the Victoria Eagles in Round 1 of the B.C. Premier Baseball League playoffs on Saturday at Serauxmen Stadium, two games to none, and now advance to the championship tournament Aug. 2-5 at UBC.
In the final games of 2019 in their home stadium, the Pirates thrilled fans with some fireworks, with three home runs and extra innings highlighting the series against the Eagles.
Mid Island won the first game, 6-1, and then came out on top 5-3 in the rematch.
The first game saw Marcus Steen go 2-for-3 at the plate with a three-run home run, and Dylan Brock had a two-run home run. Brody Deverill was 2-for-3 and Ryan Waatainen was the winning pitcher, throwing a complete game.
The second game was a back-and-forth affair as the Pirates led 2-1, fell behind 3-2, but tied it up and then eventually won it in the ninth inning.

Connor Caskenette hit a two-RBI single to break the tie and also had a solo home run earlier in the game, finishing 4-for-5 with four RBIs. Mackinnon Homeniuk went 3-for-4, Waatainen added two hits and Steen drew three walks. Colby Neff was the winning pitcher, throwing three innings of shutout relief.
GAME ON … The Pirates will join four other teams at the BCPBL championships, including the host UBC Thunder, the Langley Blaze, and two yet-to-be-determined teams.
