Over 40 girls got the chance to learn from some of Okanagan hockey’s best on Oct. 6 as part of World Girls Hockey Weekend.
The OHA hosted a prep showcase this weekend in Penticton and the CSSHL organized a special event for players and their coaches to develop their skills on and off the ice. Approximately 35 Penticton players and eight additional volunteers players from each team in the tournament participated.
“This (session) part of (the showcase), partnering with the CSSHL for the girls to get on ice with some of the best coaches and players, we wanted to let them skate with the real high level players and get that exposure,” said Barb Main, female director for Penticton Minor Hockey.
Players and coaches had the chance to participate in an on-ice skills session at the Penticton Memorial Arena followed by a “hot stove” forum with guest speakers at The Vault. This forum allowed the girls to ask questions and get tips to help their gameplay improve.
“It’s about social and physical development, and the most important thing for a lot us is for the girls to have a team, and something they’re proud of,” said Main.
“Hockey opens doors and offers opportunities.”
