Plevy nets winner as Chiefs finally win at home

The Chilliwack Chiefs beat a division rival on home ice Saturday night, edging the Surrey Eagles 3-2 in BCHL action at Prospera Centre.

Austin Plevy scored the game winning goal early in the third period and Josh Halpenny stopped 42 pucks as the Chilliwack Chiefs earned their first home win of the season.

The Chiefs picked up where they left off Friday night, following a strong third period in a 2-1 loss to  Cowichan Valley with a strong first period versus the Eagles.

Carter Cochrane scored the only goal of the opening 20, popping his fifth of the season at 3:29.

Mathieu Tibbett and Kurt Black drew the assists with some good work down low. Eagles netminder Bo Didur helped immensely, kicking out a massive rebound that Cochrane had little trouble burying.

The Chiefs doubled their lead at the 7:59 mark of period two.

Austin Plevy started the play with a slick feed to Zach Diamantoni at the Surrey blueline. The Florida native carried in and tried to beat Didur five hole. The goalie made the stop, but Blake Gober crashed the crease, jamming it across the line for his first BCHL goal.

The Eagles answered back 1:54 later.

Jonah Renouf dug out the puck behind the Chilliwack net and found Joseph Drapluk lurking near the goal mouth.

Drapluk went over Josh Halpenny’s blocker to cut the Chiefs lead in half.

Brett Mulcahy’s power play marker at 17:22 got the Eagles even, setting the stage for third period dramatics.

Plevy provided ’em 9:52 in.

Whilst killing a penalty, the captain tapped the puck past Surrey D-man Michael McEachern at the Chilliwack blueline, and took off on a breakaway. Speeding in on Didur, the Langley native threw on the brakes at the last second, stuffing the puck past the startled keeper for his second of the season and a 3-2 Chiefs lead.

On the very next shift, Halpenny made a massive save, thwarting Danton Heinen on a two-on-one rush. Chilliwack produced a big penalty kill late in the game, snuffing out the Surrey power play with Shay Laurent in box for tripping.

The Eagles pulled Didur with just over a minute to go, but the Chiefs held on, doing the center ice victory lap for the first time in 2013-14.

The three stars were Gober (first), Plevy (second) and Diamantoni (third).

The Fortis BC Energy Player of the Game was Jacob Hand.

The Chiefs are on the road tomorrow afternoon, taking on the Express in Coquitlam with a 2 p.m. puck drop.
