Qualicum Beach Lawn Bowling Club drew hosting duties for the annual District Mixed Pairs Championship, but the championship final came down to a pair of visiting club sSunday afternoon.
Port Alberni’s Stephen and Robin Forrest outlasted the Courtenay pair of Dean Penny and Carolyn Kassian by just three points in a 14-end marathon final to claim the trophy, which was presented by district president Alan Brunskill.
The two-day tournament drew the top mixed pairs teams from each club in the district, which includes Parksville, Qualicum Beach, Port Alberni, Nanaimo, Courtenay and Powell River. Because Powell River was unable to attend, one extra team each was brought in from Qualicum Beach and Parksville to make up the 12 teams needed for the tourney.
After each team played four games over the two days, the Penny-Kassian team and the Forrest pair were tied with 12 points each atop the standings.
During his presentation of the championship trophy and gold and silver medals, Brunskill noted that he had watched some great bowling over the weekend and was pleased to see some new faces among the prize winners. He also thanked Qualicum Beach Lawn Bowling Club for hosting the tourney and the club’s volunteers for their hard work over the weekend.
