Vernon’s Vasek Pospisil has moved to the Rogers Cup semifinals.
Facing him on the other side of the net will be a very familiar face as fellow Canadian Milos Raonic has also qualified for the final four.
The 23-year-old Pospisil advanced to the semis Friday after Russian Nikolay Davydenko retired (injury) in the first set of their Friday morning quarterfinal match in Montreal. Pospisil was up 3-0 when Davydenko retired.
Pospisil is now guaranteed $129,000 in the $3.5 million tennis tournament.
Raonic, the 11th seed, rode the spirited support of the centre court crowd for a 7-6 (2), 4-6, 6-4 victory over Ernests Gulbis of Latvia, who had taken out second-seeded Andy Murray on Thursday.
The last time two Canadians participated in the the quarterfinals of their home tournament was 1989.
The other semifinalists were to be decided later Friday, when top seed and defending champion Novak Djokovic of Serbia plays seventh-seeded Richard Gasquet of France, and fourth-seeded Rafael Nadal of Spain faces Australian qualifier Marinko Matosevic.
