Powell rink rules Silver Star Bonspiel

Kelsey Powell of Vernon took the Kemp Harvey A Event in the the 67th Silver Star Ladies Bonspiel

Kelsey Powell of Vernon took the Kemp Harvey A Event in the the 67th Silver Star Ladies Bonspiel last weekend at the Vernon Curling Club.

Powell was supported by third Falon Burkitt and a front end of Clare Schmidt and Jill Morrison.

Janice Mori of Vernon was second in the A event, followed by Sandra Jenkins of Salmon Arm and Kim Schwaerzle of Vernon. Mori was backed by Ina Forrest, Marje Prentice, Sharon Morrisson and Marlene Everett.

Schwaerzle got support from Marnie Kovacs, Joan Griffith and Carol Hayes.

The Vernon Veterinary Clinic B Event was topped by Lindsae Miller of New Westminster/Vernon. Kelsi Jones and Morgayne Eby, both of Vernon, played with Miller, who had Emily Miller of the Royal City at second.

Shirley Vedan of Vernon placed second in the B, while Nichol of Castlegar/Rossland and Gail Powls of Vernon were third and fourth respectively.

Marylou Staals, Mary McLean and Carol McAllister curled with Powls.

Kathy Pedersen of Vernon ruled the Red Head Real Estate/Denise Dobie C Event ahead of Vernon’s Kim Slattery, Agnes Sakakibara of Vernon and McLeod of Nelson/Fruitvale/Trail.

The Rise Golf Course D Event title was captured by Janice Hamp of Vernon. Runner-up was Team Anderson of Kelowna, followed by Team Ellingsen of Vernon/Merritt and Jean Wilkie of Vernon.

Meanwhile, Niklas Edin  of Karlstad, Sweden claimed his career first Pinty’s Grand Slam of Curling titles at the World Financial Group Masters in Okotoks, Alta.

Edin defeated reigning Olympic gold medalists Brad Jacobs of Sault Ste. Marie, Ont. with a thrilling 5-4 victory in extra ends, becoming the first European men’s Grand Slam champion in tournament history.

The new world No. 4 took home $30,000 of the $125,000 men’s purse.

Vernon’s John Morris finished 1-3, stopping Kyle Smith of Scotland 7-5 in their final preliminary game Friday afternoon at the Pason Centennial Arena

Morris, Vernon’s Jim Cotter and the Kelowna-Vernon front end of Tyrel Griffith and Rick Sawatsky now prepare for the Pinty’s Grand Slam of Curling Tour Challenge, opening Tuesday at the Western Financial Place & Memorial Arena in Cranbrook.

The second of seven events on the Grand Slam calendar, the Tour Challenge features 30 men’s and 30 women’s teams, split into two competing tiers.
