The Quesnel Curling Club’s ice-breaker bonspiel went off without a hitch Nov. 4-5, with three teams – in the A, B and C divisions – winning first-place honours.

Brady Waffle, Duane Duguid, Tracey Roberts and Sarah Coldwell took first place in the A division winning the final against Shayne Yamamoto’s team 6-4.

In the B final, Darcey Horn, Wendy Needham, Mae Ramsey and Paul Goyette took first place against Dana Johansen’s team. Horn’s team played a clean last end to claim the victory in a close 4-2 game.

And in the C final, Grant Wawryk and Willard Bentley’s teams played just three ends, after Wawryk’s team conceded the game to Bentley’s. Bentley and his teammates Rick Prosk, Carol Richter and Marilyn Wells celebrated a 7-0 win.

Teams were put together randomly, with members drawn on the spot on Saturday, and all-ages played, along with Special Olympics curlers. Eighteen teams in total came out for the fun ice-breaker event, to vie for prizes.

The organizing committee also hosted a banquet to welcome all curlers on Saturday night to this first bonspiel of the season, with door prizes, an elimination draw and a 50/50 draw. Winners won gift cards to businesses including Bliss, Wings and the Billy Barker Casino Hotel.

Organizer Darla Duguid was pleased with the turnout.

“We were really happy with the number of veteran curlers who came out, as well as the new curlers.

“Everyone had a good time and I heard several new curlers say they loved it and were looking forward to continuing to curl.”

Duguid says the event was geared towards beginners, to recruit them to the game.

“We shortened the games to six ends, so there was less pressure. It was a relaxed, fun weekend.”
