The Grade 8 girls basketball team at Prince Rupert Middle School (PRMS) are zone champions after completing an undefeated season in Hazelton on Feb. 11.

Other teams in the tournament were Terrace, Smithers and Hazelton.

Because they were ranked number one, the girls played fourth-ranked Terrace and won that game, advancing to the finals where they won a hard-fought game against Hazelton.

“It was intense from beginning to end,” said coach Billy Nelson.

The score was between two points and six points throughout, with PRMS winning by four points.

Although Nelson said the Hazelton girls were bigger, stronger and faster, the Storm wanted it more and prevailed.

“I was really proud to see that they didn’t quit. They saw how hard it was going to be and it was a goal of ours from the beginning of the year to win the banner, no matter what,” Nelson said, who said the girls played with all their heart.

Nikki Davis, a Grade 7 student, was named MVP and Justice Joseph was named an All-Star.
