It was an easy-breezy weekend for the Grade 8 boys basketball team at Prince Rupert Middle School (PRMS).
The Storm beat Skeena Middle School and Centennial Christian School by large margins in Prince Rupert on Saturday as they continue to prepare for the zone championships on Feb. 11.
In the first game against SMS, the Storm won by 40 points, and that wasn’t even the biggest win, as the team defeated CCS by approximately 60 points with its B team on the court.
Aiden Leighton was the standout player, said coach Cary Dalton.
“He’s probably the best player in this zone, not even close. He’s just physically advanced over most of the kids. It’s his athleticism and his basketball skills,” Dalton said.
Leighton is just coming off being named an all-star at the Coastal Clash tournament at Charles Hays Secondary School the weekend previous as well.
As a team, Dalton is happy with how the team is progressing.
“We’re getting better all the time. The guys will be very tough to defeat come zone time in Smithers,” he said.
The Storm is the dominant Grade 8 team in the zone, having won the title for at least the last six years, even finishing eighth in the province last year. Even with a strong team, there’s always further to climb.
“I’d like them to execute better offensively. I’d like to see us rebound better and our team defence will need to continue to improve as well,” Dalton said.
The boys will play next in a playday in Terrace.
