Proteau sets record in winning Ladies North Island

Port Alberni golfer's low gross 68 takes top spot at annual Mother's Day tourney

Christina Proteau’s record-breaking round of 68 earned her top spot at the Comox Golf Club’s annual Mother’s Day North Island Ladies golf tournament on May 12.

The Port Alberni golfer beat the previous low gross record of 70 held by Anne Newman. Proteau was awarded the Mildred Laver Trophy for her win. She was also in a foursome with Sally Dobler, Heather Swallow and Karen Kloske that won the Archie Dick Team Trophy for the lowest net team.

Fifth-year golfer Carmen Vanveller of the host club took the low net CFCP Radio Trophy with a 69. With a little mix of wind, rain and sun, 68 ladies enjoyed a tournament filled with great scores, great fellowship, a great golf course and great food.

The tourney was sponsored by the women of ReMax Ocean Pacific Realty (Marie McCooey, Jane Denham, Glenda Mosher and Lisa Jorgensen) and McCooey presented the trophies at the end of play Sunday.

Although there was no hole in one, the tournament had two sponsors: Visual Sound Store (60” Panasonic plasma TV) and Canadian Western Bank ($5,000). Nate, John and Ernie worked hard on the course for the last month making sure it was in pristine condition. Mother Nature has been on their side this year.

Head professional Doug Petrie and Don Taylor, our scorers, provided the results in record time. Our new chef Adrian and his wife Michaela, who operate the Tee Box Restaurant at the club, served a scrumptious buffet with a chocolate dessert. Following the tournament, Katrina Lenoury and Kathy Branch treated us to some rather artistic karaoke.

The Comox Ladies Club is very fortunate to have great sponsors. Numerous local businesses have provided generous sponsorship through the Hole Sponsorship Program. The tournament relies on their continued support as much as they rely on our support.

Hole sponsors this year were:

Scorpios Hair Design-Cheri Kahiamoe, Shar-Ons All Sizes -Sharon Anderson, JR Edgett Excavating Ltd-Jack and Lynda Hornstein, Toscano’s Ristorante- Bill and Wendy Meade, CIBC Wood Gundy Investment Broker-Dave Wheeldon, Re/Max Ocean Pacific Realty-Lynn Wittick, Knurm-Douglas Tribe, Bill Wheeldon Construction-Bill Wheeldon, M.Petersen Contracting-Marty Petersen, Chinook Forest Products-Ian Leakey and Ed Leakey, Sun Life Financial-Rick Siddall, Sgt Ditto-Dave Tribe, Jan Lefeber, Denturist-Jan Lefeber, Shilo Painting-Mark Vandervoort, Glacier Gutters-Rick McCaughan and Roxanne’s Fashions-Comox Mall- Valerie Porteous.

A big thank you goes out to Doug Petrie Golf Sales, Edith Albrecht, Quality Foods, Thrifty Foods and Extra Foods for their generous donations. Water was supplied by the Canadian Western Bank and the towels for the tee gift were made by Peg Runquist.

The tournament would not be successful without all the volunteers, from ball spotters, scorekeepers and registrars: Hank Verdenhalven, Gus Baudais, Audrey Haughn, Wendy Christie, Terry Christie, Yvonne Higgs, Brenda Good, Ron Pratt, Brian Buchanan, Tracy Branch, Ian Leakey, Don Vanetta, Bernice Sutherland, Vicki Edwards, Margot Hope, Mary Buchanan, Monique Walker, Rosalie Williams, Linda Diamond, Barb Tribe and Erna Weibe.

The Tournament Committee with Kathy Branch as their fearless leader, Sharon Crowe, Karen Vanetta, Sue Leakey, Grace Coulter, Mary Buchanan, Linda Callender and Nancy Riva would like to thank all the competitors for playing in this event and encourage all to support our sponsors.
