The provincial government announced Tuesday it would be chipping in $1 million to Special Olympics B.C. to host the 2014 Special Olympics Canada Summer Games in Vancouver.
Ida Chong, Minister of Community, Sport and Cultural Development, said $300,000 would go to support B.C.’s hosting of the 2014 national games, while $700,000 would go to help Special Olympics B.C. build programs and competitions for British Columbians with intellectual disabilities to improve their health and fitness.
Close to 1,800 athletes, coaches and officials from across Canada will compete in 11 sports at the 2014 Special Olympics Canada Summer Games, with basketball, bocce and golf included for the first time.
“Special Olympics B.C. is most appreciative of this funding from the B.C.
Government,” said Mike Campbell, Special Olympics B.C. board chair. “It will enable us to build on three decades of improving the lives of people with intellectual disabilities and their families.”
