These are busy times at the Qualicum Beach Lawn Bowling Club (QBLBC), and the members wouldn’t have it any other way.
“Our summer season is now in full swing. Many of our teams have traveled around the Island to tournaments — there is usually one going on every weekend,” says QBLBC booster and big fan of the game Jane Nielsen.
On June 2-3 QBLBC hosted its annual Mixed Triples event “for club members only, and is put on to help get our new bowlers involved in tournament play in a competitive but friendly environment, and we had many first and second year bowlers take part,” Nielsen said.
Taking top spot at that one was the team of Ken Welwood, Jane Nielsen and Mike Berry (a new bowler to the club).
And while the winning team went undefeated at 4-0, “there were several teams with 3-1 records, and it came down to ends won and point differential,” said Nielsen, with second place going to Darryl Chapman, Andrea Petrie and Helen Roberts, and Gwen Martin, George Machin and Dan Blue taking third.
“A good time was had by all — good bowling and as usual our volunteers in the kitchen provided lots of goodies for the bowlers to enjoy.”
“The coming months are going to be a busy time for our members,” she said, a couple of highlights being the Mens and Ladies Open Triples (June 22-23) tournament with teams from the Island participating, followed by the QBLBC’s Mens & Ladies Pairs (July 3-4).
On July 12-14 the Qualicum Beach club plays host to the Provincial Mens Fours, and Nielsen reminds readers the event is for “anyone out there who wants to see some great bowling.”
Anyone interested is invited to stop by the club (located at 665 Jones St. in QB) any Tuesday from 1-3 p.m. “as we have a coach on duty and you can give it a try.”
