Giddyup!
It was a glorious opening day for the QBMGC Ladies 18 hole section as 40 women turned out for a Texas Scramble (some in western outfits).
Taking top honours with a score of 74 was the team of ‘Yosemite Sam’ made up of Lynn Gordon, Joan Jeffs, Pat Chern and Pat Clover.
Right behind in second at 76 were the ‘Tumbling Tumbleweeds’ team of Marilyn Roney, Jill Green, Darla Clarke and Kathy Lennox.
According to QBMGC’s Kathy Lennox the format of the tourney was originally called Captains’ Choice, since the leading player in each group made the choice on shot selection, but the format became widely known as the Texas Scramble which flourished in Texas during the depression and attained great popularity in Las Vegas in the 1950s.
It eventually became a staple of charity events and pro-am tournaments and was played a lot on the LPGA tour.
