It was a weekend of fierce competition at the Qualicum Beach Civic Centre as local and visiting bridge players laid down their cards.

Organizer Janet Woolgar said the annual multi-club tournament (May 3 to 5) saw teams coming from as far away as Mexico.

“They come here for their holidays and they planned their vacation so they could be here for the tournament,” she said. “It’s a passionate pastime. Our tournament is considered the best on the Island.”

The event saw 44 tables of four embroiled in intense competition to determine bragging rights for the next year.

In the end Janet and Ted Trotter from Qualicum Beach walked away with the Novice Pairs trophy. Comox player Dick Grant and Ken Bibby from Nanaimo took the Open Pairs.

The Swiss Team Championship saw a tie between Powell River’s David Harper, Gail Fennel, Terry Stokes and Scott Glaspey and the team of Brian Fraser, Tony Farr, Danielle Goulet from Victoria and Guy Coutanche from Ontario.

“It’s fun when you go away somewhere and get to meet new people,” Wolgar said. “It’s a little adventure as well as playing bridge.”
