If it’s June this must be the Qualicum Beach Triathlon.
Slated for in and around Ravensong Aquatic Centre June 23, anyone still thinking of getting in on the action will have to wait until next year though, as the field is full.
According to the triathlon committee’s Jim Powell, this year’s Qualicum Foods QBT will feature a record number of participants at 575, which is due, he says, to increased team registration where three people compete as a team. This weekend’s installment will also include a record number of TinyTri participants this year, as 80 kids aged 4-7 “will experience the challenges of a swim, bike, run race, some for the first time.”
Hosted by the Tri-Athletics Society, this year marks the 17th running of the local triathlon, which features three divisions for individual or team entries: Adult, Youth, Minor, and Tiny Tri.
The adult division, for those 18 and over, consists of a 400m swim, 18km bike and 5km run.
The Youth (12-17) do a 200m swim, 9km bike and 2.5 km run. The Minors (8-11) have 100m swim, 4.5km bike and 1km run, while the Tiny Tri, for kids aged 4-7, swim one width of the pool, then bike and run a short distance.
“Lots of local sponsors (QF being the major one) contribute to the success of this event,” said Powell, who was also quick to extend a big QBT thanks “to the town of Qualicum Beach for working with the triathlon committee to put on and make this event a great success for local families and many visiting triathletes.”
READY SET GO
The QBT’s first heats (for minors) starts at 8 a.m., followed by the youth, then the adults. The TinyTris will go around noon.
