Qualicum Beach’s Cage Newans is the leading scorer for the Oceanside Generals and has been instrumental in helping the club become one of the top teams in the Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League this season.
The 16-year-old currently leads the Generals in scoring with 14 points in nine games — seven goals and seven assists. That includes two power-play goals. He ranks number eight in the VIJHL in scoring.
Unfortunately for the Generals, Newans’s scoring prowess will now benefit the Victoria Royals of the Western Hockey league.
The five-foot-11, 165-pound forward was called up by the Royals, who drafted Newans in the seventh round, 147th overall, in the 2018 WHL Bantam Draft.

“Cage is dynamic young player with good hockey instincts and a quick release. He had a very good training camp,” said Royals general manager Cameron Hope after drafting Newans. “We are glad to have Cage and his family join our organization.”
Newans attracted the attention of the coaches during his stint with the Delta Bantam Prep team of the Canadian Sport School Hockey League in 2017-18. Newans scored 35 points (14 goals, 21 assists) and added 52 penalty minutes in 30 contests. He finished first in team scoring during the regular season and led his club in assists. In one game with the Delta Academy Elite 15s, Newans recorded an assist.
The Royals are scheduled to host the Everett Silvertips tonight at Save-On-Foods Memorial Arena in Victoria at 7:05 p.m.
Newans is now included in the Royals roster and will don the No. 12 jersey.
