There were 115 Abbotsford Whalers at the Fraser Valley regional meet this past weekend, with one setting two regional records.
Division 5 swimmer Fallon Quast exploded at Centennial Pool, breaking records in the 50- and 100-metre butterfly events with times of 1:09.40 and 30.24 seconds, respectively.
Quast will be pushing for the provincial record in both categories in the upcoming B.C. championships, as the fastest times posted for either are just a second or so shy of the Abbotsford swimmer’s marks.
Quast managed to scoop up four first-place victories in her solo events, and an additional two in relay events.
Whalers coach Bill Murray said the team exceeded his expectations as the club continued its season trend of topping personal bests, while a handful of swimmers once more swept podium placements across their respective events.
Mervin (Div. 4) and Mary Rose Jerodico (Div. 2) dominated the four events they took part in, along with Brittany Paget (Div. 3) and Amy Connorton (Div. 4).
Another standout from was Rachel Kennedy (Div. 3).
She is almost always overlooked, Murray said, but in the 50m butterfly and 100m freestyle contests, Kennedy improved on her times secured in the preliminary heats – by a couple seconds in the latter – to claim second in the finals of both events.
Murray said the Whalers will be sending a strong contingent to the provincial championships, which are being held in Victoria, Aug. 21-23.
At this year’s regional meet, there were upwards of 400 swimmers competing.
