The Quesnel Curling Club’s Team Plant has earned itself a trip to the provincial club championship.
The 2020 B.C. Club Challenge will see 12 women’s and men’s teams compete on the ice for the chance to represent B.C. on the national level at the 2020 Canadian Curling Club Championships.
This will be the 21st year of the annual event, which will take place March 26-29 at the Royal City Curling Club in New Westminster.
The event used to combine both the B.C. Club Championships and the Pacific International Cup (PIC) into one tournament, but for the second year in a row, the two events have been separated.
While the winners of the B.C. Club Championships will head to the national event, the teams that place second and third in the men’s and women’s division will qualify for the PIC, which will run from April 15-19 at the Richmond Curling Club.
Dave Plant believes his team can compete with any other at the club level but says when you’re playing off of your home ice, the team to adjust to the conditions first is usually the one that ends up winning the event.
“It all depends on how you start — if you go down there and you get a couple of wins right away and you figure the ice out, and that’s usually what happens, whoever figures the ice out fastest and understands the rocks will end up on top,” he said. “You gotta make your routine shots; you can’t miss those. There’s gonna be difficult shots that you’re not gonna make, and that’s OK, but the routine shots, you’ve gotta hit those.”
Team Plant is made up of skip Dave Plant, third Colin Shpak, second Todd Jensen and lead Dave Henderson.
