Quesnel excels at cross country zones

Junior Girl's team placed first at snowy Dawson Creek meet

Quesnel’s athletes had to run extra fast in order to stay warm at the North Central District Cross-Country Zone Championships on Saturday (Oct. 19).

Despite snowy conditions, the Quesnel Junior Girls’ team was able to secure first place.

Individual results for the young ladies were impressive too. Ruby Nicholas continued her torrid start to the season with another win in the Junior division; her sister, Claire, finished second in Bantam, and she was followed closely by local boxer Britynn Carter, who finished third in the same division.

The Bantams were the strongest division, with five girls finishing in the top 10.

On the Boys’ side, Caleb Woolends added another quick run to his results this year, finishing third among Juniors. Lucas Arnold was also impressive on the frigid day, landing himself a fifth-place finish in the same division.

Joshua Andres and Christopher Henderson finished sixth and seventh in Senior Boys.

Conditions could not have been more different than they were at the meet two weeks previous at Quesnel’s West Fraser Timber Park.

While the home run was held on a sunny fall day, the zones saw the athletes slogging through a snowy and muddy Dawson Creek course while being snowed on.

Grimaced faces were worn by many competitors as they pushed themselves through the uncomfortable circumstances.

On the bright side, those who performed well should have a far easier time at the provincial championships in Abbotsford on Nov. 2.
