Quesnel Girl’s Softball continues to make its mark on the province this year.
The U14 and U16 Girl’s teams both took home gold from a tournament in Vernon this weekend (May 25-26).
The squads overcame some rainy conditions on the Saturday and both participated in nail-biters in the final games to clinch first place finishes.
Ryan McTavish, head coach of the U14 team, says their pitching was great. Lead by Maddy Oakley, Maddy Philbrooke and Alexa McTavish, they were able to keep a handle on the games.
He also says their base running was exceptional.
“I think it helped us steal the tournament,” he adds, somewhat cheekily.
There were 12 teams in their division and their final game was a 5-4 win over Kelowna.
They will continue to practice together to get ready for the provincial championships in Port Alberni on the weekend of July 5-6.
The U16 team went unbeaten at the championships thanks to some great overall play.
“I don’t think I can remember a single error,” says head coach Linda Currie.
“They were just flawless. We had really strong pitchers but we didn’t have to rely on them 100 percent.”
Currie points out the MVP awards are ordinarily presented to pitchers at these tournaments but in this case they were distributed elsewhere.
“We had one that went to our shortstop, one that went to our third basemen and one went to a centre fielder,” she says. “It was really cool that it got spread around.”
They also had a tight game against a tough Kamloops squad on the Sunday, squeaking by with a 5-3 win.
Quesnel will host the U16 provincial championships at West Fraser Timber Park on July 12-14.
“Softball BC is really excited for us to bring it North,” Currie says, “It’s going to be really good ball.”
